Best time to visit Arunachal Pradesh: tour season by month
Short answer: October to April for Tawang and snow, March to May for flowers and the eastern valleys, and avoid late June to early September everywhere.
Arunachal does not have one season, because it does not have one climate. Pasighat at 500 ft is subtropical. Tawang at 10,000 ft has hard winters. Picking the right month depends far more on where you are going than on some general idea of the best time to visit.

Arunachal tour in October
Clear skies after the monsoon, open passes and the Tawang Festival. It is also the busiest month, because the Durga Puja holidays send travellers up from Kolkata. Rooms in Tawang go months ahead, so book by June.
Arunachal tour in December
Snow on Sela Pass and cold nights in Tawang. It is the month for snow, and the Sela Tunnel means a snowfall no longer cuts you off. Bum La and Madhuri Lake may be closed, and the Siang River Festival runs at Pasighat and Aalo. See our notes on doing Tawang in winter.

Warm days in the west with some pre-monsoon showers, good for Tawang and Dirang but humid in the valleys of the east. Build in a spare day, because showers become more frequent as the month goes on and roads can slip.
If you want snow
December to mid-March on Sela Pass and in Tawang town. Since the Sela Tunnel opened in 2024, a snowfall no longer means being cut off — traffic passes underneath the worst of it. Mayudia Pass near Roing is the eastern alternative, usually holding snow from late December to February. Bum La and Madhuri Lake are frequently closed in deep winter, so if those are essential, travel in April or October instead.
If you want rhododendrons
Mid-March to late April on the Sela and Bomdila slopes. Arunachal has one of the richest rhododendron communities in India, and the higher stretches turn red and pink for about six weeks. It coincides with mild days and open passes, which makes April arguably the best single month in the state.
Why the monsoon is a genuine problem
This is not ordinary Indian monsoon inconvenience. The hillsides between Tenga and Bomdila, and on the Aalo–Mechuka road, are prone to slides that close the road entirely. A closure can last hours or several days, and there is no alternative route. We do run trips in June and September, but only with padded itineraries and a clear conversation about the risk. In July and August we usually advise people to postpone.

When it is busiest
Tawang fills up during Durga Puja and the October holidays, over Christmas and New Year, and through the summer school break for travellers coming up from Assam and West Bengal. Ziro sells out entirely during the music festival weekend — if you want those dates, book four to five months ahead. March, April and November are the sweet spot: good weather, open passes and rooms available.
