Mechuka is what people imagine Arunachal is before they arrive: a wide glacial valley with a river braiding across the floor, wooden villages, and a monastery on the ridge that predates most of what you have seen elsewhere in India.
It is also hard to reach. The road from Aalo takes eight to nine hours over surfaces that range from decent to genuinely rough. That is precisely why the valley is still quiet, and why this trip suits travellers who have already done Ladakh and Spiti and want the next thing.

Arrive Dibrugarh, drive to Pasighat
Pickup at Dibrugarh airport and across into Arunachal at Ruksin. Evening on the Siang riverfront in Arunachal's oldest town.

Daying Ering sanctuary, the Siang riverfront and the hanging bridges. Rafting available in the cooler months.

Pasighat to Aalo
Four hours up the valley to the confluence of the Yomgo and Sipu. Afternoon at the cane bridges near Kabu and Patum.

An east Arunachal tour package, not a west one
This is our east Arunachal tour package. It starts at Dibrugarh rather than Guwahati and follows the Siang valley north, so it is a different trip from Tawang: fewer visitors, rougher roads and a slower pace. Most travellers do the west first and the east on a second visit.
Be realistic about the roads
The Aalo–Mechuka road is under improvement in sections and the condition changes season to season. Eight to nine hours is our planning figure; after heavy rain it can be longer. This is not a trip for anyone who gets frustrated by delay, and it is not a trip to attempt during the monsoon.
Where you stay
Mechuka has guest houses and homestays rather than hotels. Rooms are clean and simple, heating is a bukhari stove, hot water may be by bucket, and wifi is best assumed not to exist. Travellers who arrive expecting this have a wonderful time. Travellers who arrive expecting a Tawang-standard hotel do not.
Permits for the east
Your Inner Line Permit must list East Siang, West Siang and Shi-Yomi districts. Border proximity means additional checks; carry printed ID and permit copies. Foreign nationals face tighter restrictions in this sector — talk to us early.
