Arunachal tour itinerary: day-by-day plans that actually fit
Most itineraries you find online are written by people who have never driven Sela Pass. These are the plans we actually run, with honest driving hours and sensible altitude gain.
The single most common mistake in an Arunachal tour plan is underestimating road time. Google Maps will tell you Guwahati to Tawang is eleven hours. In practice it is two days, because the last 180 km take six hours on a good day and considerably longer behind an army convoy.
Build your plan around overnight stops, not distances. Below are four itineraries we run, from five days to thirteen.
Arunachal tour itinerary 7 days — Tawang from Guwahati
The standard trip, and the one we book most. Round trip from Guwahati, crossing Sela Pass, with two nights in Tawang so you are not turning round the day you arrive.

Guwahati to Bhalukpong or Nameri
Meet your driver at the airport or your hotel and head east along the Brahmaputra. About 5 hours to the Arunachal gate at Bhalukpong, where your Inner Line Permit is checked. If you land early enough there is time for a walk in Nameri.

Bhalukpong to Dirang
The climb starts properly today. Tenga valley, the war memorial, then Bomdila at 8,000 ft for lunch and the monastery. Down into Dirang by late afternoon — the drop is deliberate, it helps you acclimatise.

Dirang and Sangti, then on to Tawang
Morning at the Dirang Dzong, the hot springs and the yak research centre. After lunch, the long haul over Sela Pass at 13,700 ft, stopping at Sela Lake and Jaswant Garh, with Nuranang Falls before the descent into Tawang.

Tawang Monastery and around
A full day in town. The monastery in the morning while the prayers are on, then Urgelling, the Ani Gompa nunneries and the war memorial. Nothing strenuous — your second day at altitude is not the day for it.

Bum La Pass and Madhuri Lake
An early start with the permits collected the previous evening. Bum La sits at 15,200 ft on the border; Sangetsar (Madhuri) Lake is a drowned forest on the way back. Both are weather dependent and neither can be guaranteed.

Tawang back to Dirang or Bomdila
Recross Sela, this time with the light on the other side of the valley. A relaxed afternoon in Dirang or Bomdila with time for the market.

Return to Guwahati
Down through Tenga and Bhalukpong to the plains, reaching Guwahati airport by early evening. Book flights after 7 pm to be safe.

5-day itinerary — Dirang, Bomdila and Sangti
For anyone with limited leave. You stay below 9,000 ft, the driving days are half the length, and you still get high country.

The only sensible way to combine the western circuit with the central valleys. It involves one long transfer day, which we break at Nameri.

13-day itinerary — Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal
For travellers flying in from Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore or Pune, where the flight alone eats a day at each end. One long trip beats three short ones.

A good Arunachal tour plan is built backwards from your leave. Count the days you have, subtract travel to Guwahati, then pick the itinerary above that fits with one slack day for weather.

- Short of days: take the 5-day plan and add Tawang on a later trip.

Four rules for planning your own
- Never gain more than 5,000 ft of sleeping altitude in a day. Guwahati to Tawang direct breaks this badly and is the main reason people spend their first day in Tawang with a headache.
- Cap driving at six hours where you can. Mountain hours are not plains hours. Eight hours on the Bomdila road is a genuinely long day.
- Keep the last day loose. Fly out of Guwahati in the evening, not the morning. Landslides and convoys do not care about your gate closing.
- Two nights minimum wherever you actually want to be. One-night stops mean you see the hotel and the road, nothing else.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 7-day Arunachal itinerary enough for Tawang?
Yes, and it is the right length. Seven days from Guwahati gives you two nights in Tawang, one night each side to break the altitude, and a full day for Bum La and Madhuri Lake. Six days works but removes your weather buffer.
Can I do Arunachal in 4 days?
Only the lower West Kameng area — Nameri, Dirang and Bomdila. Tawang is not realistic in four days from Guwahati, and any operator who says otherwise is planning two 11-hour driving days.
What is the best Arunachal tour plan from Kolkata?
Fly Kolkata to Guwahati on the first morning and start driving the same day, which saves a night. A 7-day Tawang trip therefore becomes 8 days door to door. See the Kolkata page for flight timings that work.
Should I book an itinerary or travel independently?
Independent travel is possible if you have time to absorb delays, but shared taxis run on their own schedule, rooms in Tawang fill during season, and the Bum La permit has to be applied for in person. Most people find the cost difference smaller than expected once they price a private vehicle.
