Skipping Tawang on a short trip is the single best decision most first-time visitors can make. You reach genuine mountain country on day two, you sleep at a comfortable 5,000 ft, and your driving days are half the length.
Dirang has a 500-year-old stone-walled dzong that people still live in, sulphur hot springs, apple and kiwi orchards and a yak research centre. Sangti Valley nearby is a quiet river flat where black-necked cranes have historically wintered. Bomdila, 3,000 ft higher, has three monasteries and a long view to the snow line.

Dirang hotels and where we stay
Dirang is a small market town, and most Dirang hotels sit around Dirang market or a short drive up the valley. They are simple, family-run properties rather than resorts. What matters is hot water, a heater in winter and whether the room looks over the river. We book in advance because rooms fill during the October holidays and at New Year.
Who this trip suits
- Families with young children. No altitude above 8,000 ft, no day longer than six hours in the car.
- Travellers with older parents. The same reasons, plus hot springs.
- Anyone with five days of leave. This is a complete trip, not a compromised Tawang.
- Weekend-plus travellers from Guwahati or Kolkata. Kolkata to Guwahati is a 70-minute flight, so this works as a six-day trip door to door.

Sangti Valley and the black-necked cranes
Sangti has historically been a wintering site for black-necked cranes, which arrive around November and leave in March. Numbers vary year to year and sightings are never guaranteed, but the valley itself — a flat river meadow ringed by hills, with almost no traffic — is worth the morning regardless.
