How to choose between them
If this is your first trip to the North East
Take the Assam and Arunachal combination. Kaziranga sits directly on the road between Guwahati and the hills, so you are not making a detour, and the contrast between rhino grassland and a 13,700 ft pass in the same week is the thing people remember.
If you have five days and no more
Dirang and Bomdila. You reach real mountain country on day two, sleep at a comfortable 5,000 ft, and you are not spending the whole trip in a car. Skipping Tawang on a short trip is the single best decision most travellers can make.
If you want somewhere genuinely quiet
Mechuka. The road in from Aalo is rough and the valley has a handful of guest houses, which is exactly why there is nobody there. This is the trip for people who have already done Ladakh and Spiti.
If you are travelling with parents or small children
Dirang, Bomdila and Ziro all stay below 6,000 ft and have short driving days. Tawang is possible but needs an extra night at Dirang to break the climb — we will build that in automatically rather than selling you the faster version.
If you are coming for a festival
The dates move each year with the lunar calendar. Losar in February or March, Nyokum in late February, Mopin in April, Solung in September, the Ziro Music Festival in late September, the Tawang Festival in October and the Pakke Paga Hornbill Festival in January. Ask us for the current year's dates before you book flights.

On road closures: no operator in Arunachal can promise a pass will be open. If Sela closes for a day, we rearrange the itinerary and you pay only the real extra cost of the additional night — we do not add a margin to it. Any operator promising a guaranteed Bum La visit in January is selling you something they cannot control.
