Ziro is flat, which in Arunachal is remarkable. A wide valley at 5,500 ft, ringed by pine hills, with villages of bamboo houses set among rice terraces worked the same way for centuries.
The Apatani cultural landscape is on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list, and unlike Tawang the appeal here is not scenery you photograph from a car window — it is walking through villages, sitting in kitchens and understanding a farming system that supports an unusually dense population without machines or draught animals.

Arrive Guwahati or Lilabari, drive to Itanagar
Pickup and the drive to the state capital. If time allows, Ita Fort and Ganga Lake in the late afternoon.

Itanagar to Ziro
Four to five hours climbing through forest to the plateau. Afternoon walk through the rice terraces as the light drops.

Apatani villages
Hong, one of the largest villages in the state, then Hari and Bamboo village with a local guide. Afternoon at the Ziro Putu viewpoint over the whole valley.

Talley Valley
A day walk into Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary through silver fir and rhododendron. Evening back in the village with apong and a home-cooked meal.

The Ziro Music Festival
Held on the valley floor in late September, this is the best known music event in the North East and the one weekend Ziro genuinely fills up. Accommodation is almost entirely camping and village homestays, and it sells out months ahead. If you want the festival, contact us in May or June — by August there is usually nothing left. Dates change each year; ask us for the current ones.
Visiting Apatani villages respectfully
Older Apatani women wear distinctive facial tattoos and nose plugs, a practice discontinued decades ago. They are photographed constantly by visitors and many are tired of it. Ask first, accept no as an answer, and if someone agrees, sit and talk rather than shooting and leaving. Our guides are from the villages and will introduce you properly, which changes the encounter entirely.
Combining Ziro with Tawang
