Arunachal tour map and travel map: how to reach
There is no long-haul airport inside Arunachal, so every trip starts with a flight to Assam and a long drive. Here are the real distances, the drive times that actually apply, and which gateway suits which part of the state.
The three circuits at a glance
Arunachal runs roughly 1,000 km west to east. No single trip covers it. Pick a circuit, then pick a gateway to match.

By train
Naharlagun is the railhead for Itanagar and the only significant station inside Arunachal, connected to Guwahati, New Delhi and Kolkata. Guwahati is the main junction for the west, Harmuti and North Lakhimpur serve the Ziro approach, and Tinsukia and Dibrugarh serve the east. Trains reach the edge of the state, never the hills.

Arunachal travel time by car, bus and shared taxi
By car. This is how almost every tour runs: a hired car with a driver who knows the roads. The times in the table above assume it. Guwahati to Tawang is two days, never one.
By bus. State and private buses and shared taxis serve the main western route from Tezpur and Bhalukpong to Bomdila, Dirang and Tawang, and run to Itanagar. Timetables change and services can stop when a road is blocked, so confirm at the stand the day before. Buses take you to towns, not to sights: Sela Pass viewpoints, Bum La and Madhuri Lake need a hired vehicle.

- Bhalukpong — from Tezpur, for the western circuit and Tawang.
- Banderdewa — from North Lakhimpur, for Itanagar.
- Kimin — the alternative approach to Ziro.
- Ruksin — from Assam into Pasighat and East Siang.
- Dirak and Namsai — for the far eastern districts.

Which airport is nearest to Tawang?
Tezpur is geographically nearest but has very few flights. In practice everyone flies to Guwahati, about 500 km and two days' drive away. Salonibari at Tezpur can save a few hours if the schedule works for you.
Is there an airport in Arunachal Pradesh?
Yes. Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi near Itanagar is the state's greenfield airport, and there are smaller airfields at Pasighat, Ziro and Tezu with limited regional services. For most itineraries, Guwahati or Dibrugarh remains the practical arrival point.
Can I reach Arunachal Pradesh by train?
Only to the edge of it. Naharlagun near Itanagar is the main station inside the state, connected to Guwahati, Delhi and Kolkata. Everything beyond is by road.
How long is the drive from Guwahati to Tawang?
About 500 km, planned as two days with a night at Dirang or Bomdila. Doing it in one is unsafe, ignores altitude, and no responsible operator will schedule it.
