Arunachal tour places: the best places to visit in Arunachal Pradesh
Eighteen destinations across the state, west to east, with the altitude, the drive time and the season that actually suits each one. Arunachal is 84,000 sq km — you will not see it in one trip, and this page is meant to help you choose which part.
Arunachal Pradesh has 26 districts and more than 100 tribes, and the distance from Tawang in the west to Dong in the east is roughly the distance from Delhi to Kolkata — on mountain roads. Most first-time visitors pick one of three corridors.
The three corridors
The western circuit runs from Guwahati or Tezpur through Bhalukpong, Dirang and Bomdila to Tawang. It has the best roads, the most beds and the highest pass. Seven days minimum.
The central route goes from Guwahati or North Lakhimpur to Ziro, then on to Daporijo and Aalo if you have time. Softer landscape, deeper culture, lower altitude. Five days for Ziro alone.
The eastern circuit starts at Dibrugarh and covers Pasighat, Aalo, Mechuka, Roing, Tezu and Namdapha. The least visited, the roughest roads, and the part of the state that still feels genuinely remote. Eight days or more.
Mixing corridors in one trip means long transfers. If you have ten days, Tawang plus Ziro works. Tawang plus Mechuka does not.
The places, west to east
Tawang
Tawang Monastery was founded in the 1680s and is the largest in India. It holds an eight-metre gilded Buddha, a library of manuscripts that survived the 1962 war, and about 400 monks. The town sits in a wide bowl with the monastery on the ridge above it. Around Tawang: Urgelling Monastery, birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama; the Ani Gompa nunneries; Nuranang Falls on the way in; and Madhuri Lake and Bum La Pass on the Chinese border, both of which need an additional permit issued in Tawang itself.
Sela Pass & the Sela Tunnel
The pass every Tawang trip crosses. Sela Lake sits beside the road at the top and freezes over in winter. Since the Sela Tunnel opened in 2024, traffic can pass underneath in bad weather, which has made Tawang a realistic year-round destination for the first time. Jaswant Garh, the memorial to Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, is a short distance below on the Tawang side.
Ziro Valley
A flat plateau of terraced rice fields worked by the Apatani, who farm fish and rice in the same paddies. The cultural landscape is on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list. Visit Hong, one of the largest villages in the state, and Hari and Bamboo villages; walk the pine trail into Talley Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. The Ziro Music Festival, held on a valley floor stage each September, is the best known event in the North East.
Mechuka
A broad glacial valley about 29 km from the McMahon Line, opened to visitors relatively recently. The Samten Yongcha monastery above the town is around 400 years old and belongs to the Mahayana tradition. The Yargyap Chu braids across the valley floor past Memba and Ramo villages. The road in from Aalo is slow and often rough, which is the reason the valley is still empty.
Dirang & Sangti Valley
The stone-walled Dirang Dzong is a 500-year-old fortified village still lived in. Nearby are sulphur hot springs, apple and kiwi orchards, and the National Yak Research Centre. Sangti Valley, a short drive away, is a quiet river flat where black-necked cranes have historically wintered. Most Tawang itineraries stop here for a night to break the altitude gain, and it deserves the stop.
Bomdila
The district headquarters and the first real mountain town on the way up. Three monasteries sit on terraces above the market, the highest with a long view across the Kameng valley to the snow line. There is a craft centre selling Monpa carpets and masks, and an apple orchard belt around town.
Bhalukpong & Nameri
The entry gate into Arunachal from Tezpur, where Inner Line Permits are checked. Just across the river in Assam, Nameri National Park offers rafting on the Jia Bhoroli and one of the better birding walks in the region, including the white-winged wood duck. A common first night for groups leaving Guwahati in the afternoon.
Pasighat
The oldest town in Arunachal, founded in 1911, where the Brahmaputra enters India as the Siang after crossing Tibet as the Yarlung Tsangpo. Rafting and kayaking run here in the cooler months. Daying Ering Wildlife Sanctuary sits on the river islands downstream, and the road north leads to Aalo, Mechuka and the Siang valley villages.
Aalo (Along)
A river town at the meeting of the Yomgo and Sipu, and the staging post for Mechuka. Hanging cane bridges cross the river near Kabu and Patum; the Galo villages around town are welcoming and the Mopin festival in April is worth timing a trip around.
Itanagar
The state capital, and for most people a transit stop rather than a destination. Worth a few hours: the 14th-century Ita Fort the city is named after, Ganga Lake at the edge of town, the Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum for tribal artefacts, and the Buddhist temple consecrated by the Dalai Lama. Hollongi's Donyi Polo Airport is about 25 km away.
Namdapha National Park
The third largest national park in India and the only protected area in the world recorded to hold four big cats — tiger, leopard, clouded leopard and snow leopard. It rises from lowland rainforest to permanent snow within its own boundary. Access is from Miao and this is genuinely rough travel: forest rest houses, leeches in the wet months, long walks. Best from November to March.
Roing & Mayudia Pass
A quiet base below the Dibang hills. Sally Lake sits in forest above the town, Mehao Wildlife Sanctuary behind it, and the Mayudia Pass at around 8,500 ft gets snow between December and February — the most accessible snow in East Arunachal. Bhismaknagar, a 14th-century brick fort, is a short drive away.
Dong Valley
The first place in India to see the sunrise, near Walong at the eastern extreme of the state. People walk up from Dong village before dawn for it. The drive out from Tezu is long and the infrastructure is minimal, but for anyone who wants to stand where the country's day begins, this is the place.
Anini
The headquarters of India's least densely populated district. Wide alpine meadows, the Dri and Mathun rivers, and the Idu Mishmi communities who live there. There are very few beds and the road is seasonal — a trip for travellers who are comfortable with uncertainty.
Pakke Tiger Reserve
A tiger reserve better known for hornbills, where the local Nyishi community switched from hunting hornbills for headdresses to protecting their nests. The Pakke Paga Hornbill Festival in January celebrates it. Good elephant and gaur sightings, and easy to combine with Nameri.
Tezu & Parshuram Kund
The staging town for the far east. Parshuram Kund on the Lohit river draws tens of thousands of pilgrims every January for Makar Sankranti. From Tezu the roads run on to Walong, Dong and Anini.
Daporijo
A midway halt on the long central route between Ziro and Aalo, on the Subansiri river. Tagin and Hill Miri villages, cane bridges and very little tourism. Most people stop here only because the drive demands it, but the villages reward a day.
Kaziranga (Assam)
Not in Arunachal, but on the road for almost every trip that starts in Guwahati and heads east. Two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos live here. A morning jeep safari in the Central or Western range adds one night to your itinerary and is worth it for anyone who has not seen the park.

If you are choosing one Arunachal tour place to build a trip around, start with how many days you have. The best Arunachal travel places on a short leave are not the same as the ones worth a full fortnight.

Which is the number one tourist place in Arunachal Pradesh?
Tawang, by a wide margin. The monastery, Sela Pass and Madhuri Lake draw more visitors than the rest of the state combined. Ziro Valley is second, helped by the music festival each September.
Which places in Arunachal get snow?
Sela Pass and Tawang from December to March, Mayudia Pass near Roing from December to February, and Bum La Pass whenever it is open. Dirang and Bomdila see occasional light snow in January.
Can I visit Arunachal without going to Tawang?
Easily, and many repeat visitors do. Ziro, Pasighat, Mechuka, Roing and Namdapha are all full trips on their own and are far quieter. Skipping Tawang also removes the two hardest driving days.
How far is Tawang from Guwahati?
About 500 km, which takes two full days of driving with an overnight stop at Dirang or Bomdila. Attempting it in one day is unsafe and most operators will not do it.
Which place in India sees the sunrise first?
Dong Valley in Anjaw district, at the far eastern end of Arunachal near Walong. In midwinter the sun reaches it shortly after 5 am.
