2. Tawang Monastery
Founded in the 1680s, it is the largest monastery in India and the centre of a Tawang trip. Nearby Urgelling is the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama.
3. Sela Pass and the Sela Tunnel
Sela Pass at 13,700 ft is the high point of the road to Tawang. Since the Sela Tunnel opened in 2024, traffic can pass underneath in bad weather.
4. Tribal cultures

5. Ziro Valley and the Apatani
The terraced rice fields of Ziro are on UNESCO's tentative World Heritage list, and the Ziro Music Festival each September is the best known event in the North East.
6. Rhododendrons and orchids
Arunachal has one of the richest rhododendron communities in India. The Sela and Bomdila slopes turn red and pink from mid-March to late April.
7. Wildlife and Namdapha
Namdapha National Park, near Miao in the east, is a large rainforest reserve reported to hold tiger, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard in one protected area. Pakke and Nameri are easier to reach.
8. Mechuka and the eastern valleys
Far from the main circuit, Mechuka and the Siang valley are known for glacial river valleys, old monasteries and very few visitors.
9. Festivals
Losar in the Buddhist west, Nyokum, Mopin and Solung among the tribes of the centre, and the Siang River Festival in December. Dates move with the calendar, so check the festival calendar before you book.
10. Space
Arunachal has the lowest population density of any Indian state. The roads are long and the villages are small, which is the real reason people come back.
