Taking parents and children to Arunachal: what actually works

Arunachal is a wonderful family destination and a poor one, depending entirely on which itinerary you pick.

The mistake families make is booking the same Tawang itinerary a group of 25-year-olds would take, then discovering on day three that a seventy-year-old at 13,700 ft is having a difficult time.

Altitude is the whole question

Tawang is at 10,000 ft. Sela is at 13,700. Bum La is around 15,200. For most healthy adults this is manageable with a sensible ascent profile. For anyone with a heart or lung condition, or a child under five, it deserves a conversation with a doctor before you book.

Medical facilities above Bomdila are limited. That is not a reason to stay away — it is a reason to plan properly.

Driving days

Six hours is our normal ceiling and four is better with children. On a family trip we will often add a night purely to break a long transfer, which costs a little more and saves the holiday.

Food

Tell us about vegetarian, Jain or allergy requirements when you enquire, not on arrival. Small-town kitchens in Dirang and Ziro can cook what you need, but they need notice. Fussy young eaters do better than parents expect — rice, dal, eggs and noodles are available everywhere.

Practical things that help

  • Book hotels with proper room heating if travelling between November and February. Ask for the property names and check.
  • Carry your regular medicines. Pharmacies are limited outside district headquarters.
  • Motion sickness tablets for everyone, not just the person who usually needs them. The Bomdila road is relentless.
  • Take the ground-floor room where you can. Lifts are rare.
  • Build one completely free day. Someone will need it.
