Arunachal tour by bike: riding to Tawang, honestly assessed
Every season a few hundred riders take on the Tawang circuit. Here is what nobody tells you until you are 60 km past the last fuel pump.
The Tawang circuit is one of the great rides in India and considerably less crowded than Leh. It is also less forgiving, because the support infrastructure that has grown up around Ladakh simply does not exist here.
Permits, for you and the bike
You need an Inner Line Permit like any other visitor, listing every district on your route. Your bike needs its registration, insurance and pollution certificate in order, and out-of-state vehicles get checked more carefully at the gates. Carry printed copies of everything — phone signal at Bhalukpong is unreliable and the officer at the barrier is not going to wait while your PDF loads.
Fuel
Plan fuel stops rather than assuming them. Fill at Bhalukpong, Tenga, Bomdila, Dirang and Tawang. The stretch from Dirang over Sela to Tawang is about 135 km with nothing reliable in between, and pumps in small towns do run dry. A five-litre can is not paranoid.
The road itself
Bhalukpong to Bomdila is mostly good tarmac with long climbing corners. Bomdila to Dirang is fine. Dirang to Sela is where it gets serious — altitude, cold, and stretches under construction that turn to slush when it snows. Since the Sela Tunnel opened, you have the option of going under the worst of the pass weather, which has made winter riding far more viable.
Cold
Riders consistently underestimate this. At Sela you are at 13,700 ft with wind chill on top. Even in April, mornings are near freezing. Heated grips, proper thermals, a windproof outer layer and waterproof gloves are not optional. Wet hands at that altitude end rides.
Altitude
Riding masks altitude symptoms because you are concentrating. Then you stop, and the headache arrives. Break the journey at Dirang for a night. Do not ride Guwahati to Tawang in two days, however good you are.
The route we suggest
- Guwahati to Bhalukpong — 230 km, easy highway warm-up
- Bhalukpong to Dirang — 140 km, the real climbing begins
- Dirang to Tawang — 135 km over Sela, the big day
- Tawang — rest day, Bum La if the weather allows
- Tawang to Bomdila — back over the pass
- Bomdila to Guwahati — long descent, leave early
What we do for riders
We handle permits, book rooms with secure parking, and can run a backup vehicle carrying luggage, spares and fuel. That last one changes the trip — riding Sela without 20 kg on your back is a different experience. Ask us for a rider package.
